Eli Cramer (1842-1913) of Manheim was the first from the county to __ on April 20, 1861 in Co. C of the 3rd Infantry at Albany. He was wounded in the war and lost his arm due to blood poisoning. He spent his life at the National Soldiers Home at Mountain Branch, Tennessee.
The 97th Regiment was known as the "Conkling Rifles" and recruited principally from Herkimer and __ Counties.
