The GAR, Grand Army of the Republic, was formed in 1866 as a fraternal organization for __ veterans. Eight posts were formed in Herkimer County.
Jenks Perkins (1840-1863) of Salisbury was in the 121st, Co. H., was __ at Salem Church, VA on May 3, 1863 and died a month later. He is buried at the US Soldiers & Airmen's Home National Cemetery in Washington, D.C.

The Antietam National __ in Maryland was established May 26, 1865. At the battle (also called Sharpsburg) more than 23,110 men were killed, wounded, or listed as missing. Approximately 4,000 were killed, including John Beardsley of the 34th Regiment, who is buried there.
A #10 Across was dedicated on Sept. 17, 1902 for the service of the 34th Regt. on the Antietam __ alongside the Dunker Church where the regiment had done its heaviest fighting.
Of the deaths recorded during the war, two-thirds were from __. Charles Addy, of Herkimer, was with the 97th and died of typhoid on July 15, 1862 at Warrenton, Va.
Camp Schuyler, located one mile east of Mohawk, was named for Henry Schuyler (1805-1865) who leased the land for __ grounds for Civil War troops.
Lt. Col. John P. Spofford (1818-1884) of Brocketts Bridge who led the 97th regiment was captured at Gettysburg and taken to __ Prison from which he and other officers pulled off a great escape via a tunnel they dug, but were recaptured. A prisoner exchange allowed him to rejoin the 97th.
