Biochemistry Vocabulary

Across
A glucose storage polysaccharide found in the liver and muscle of animals; the animal equivalent of starch.
The building block of a polymer. (Monosaccharide, Triglyceride, Amino Acid, Nucleotide).
Monomer of a carbohydrate. The simplest carbohydrate. Also known as simple sugars. The molecular formulas of monosaccharides are generally some multiple of CH2O. (glucose, fructose, galactose)
Any compound that contains Carbon.
A six-carbon sugar (C6H12O6). The most common monosaccharide in organisms.
A fatty acid in which all carbons are connected by single bonds, thus maximizing the number of hydrogen atoms that can attach to the carbon skeleton.
A group that includes sugar and starch, used for energy or structure. Can be small molecules (monosaccharides or disaccharides) or large molecules (polysaccharides, like starch or cellulose). Made of Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, in a 1:2:1 ratio.
A long chain of hydrocarbons. One of the monomers of a lipid. Fatty acids vary in length and in the number and location of double bonds.
Molecules that make up the inner bilayer of cell membranes. They have a polar, hydrophilic (H2O loving) head and a nonpolar, hydrophobic (H2O fearing) tail. Example is Cholesterol.
A polymer of up to over a thousand monosaccharides. (polymer of a carbohydrate)Examples: starch, cellulose, glycogen, and chitin.
Down
Large molecule that is made of many monomers linked together. (Carbohydrate, Lipid, Protein, Nucleic Acid).
A fatty acid possessing one or more double bonds between the carbons. Such bonding reduces the number of hydrogen atoms attached to the carbon skeleton.
A family of compounds, including fats, phospholipids, and steroids, that are insoluble in water. Made of Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, NOT in a 1:2:1 ratio.
A structural polysaccharide of cell walls, consisting of glucose monomers.
lipid-based hormones containing a four carbon-ring structure. An example would be Cholesterol.
A storage polysaccharide in plants consisting entirely of glucose molecules bonded together. A polymer of carbohydrate found in plants and used to store energy.
