Ten Extinct Species

Across
This zebra-like horse was hunted to extinction without there being a realization that there would soon be none left past the year 1883. It became extinct because it was ruthlessly hunted down both for meat and for it special striped leather by South African farmers.
These felines from Java were a subspecies limited to the Indonesian island of Java. In the early 19th century, they were so common that in some areas they were considered nothing more than pests. As the human population increased, large parts of the island were cultivated, and this led to a severe reduction of their natural habitat. Wherever man moved in on the island, they were ruthlessly hunted down or poisoned.
As China developed economically, pressure on these river dolphins grew. Industrial and residential waste flowing into the Yangtze began the slaughter. The Yangtze riverbed was also dredged and reinforced with concrete in many locations. Ship traffic increased & boats grew in size; fishermen also employed wider and more lethal fish nets. Noise pollution caused the nearly blind animal to collide with propellers. In the 1970s, an estimated half of Baiji deaths were attributed to entanglement in fishing nets; only a few hundred were left by 1970. Then the number dropped down to 400 by the 1980s and then to 13 in 1997 when a full-fledged search was conducted. This marine mammal was declared functionally extinct after an expedition late in 2006 failed to record a single individual after an extensive search of the animal’s entire water range.
This Egyptian mythologized animal was primarily hunted down by European hunters who began killing them both for recreation and for meat. People who resided in Morocco shot these animals both for fun & for hunting sport. For whatever indefensible reasons, hunting wiped out its large herds throughout Northern Africa..
Humans hunted the bird for more than 100,000 years using the bird as fishing bait and as a food source; this resulted in the bird's numbers being reduced. High demand for the bird’s feathers in Europe eliminated the population during the mid-16th century.
Down
Out of 30,000 of them alive during the time of 30 years ago within the jungles of Costa Rica, only eight males and two females could be located in 1988. In 1989, a single male was found, and it was the last of this yellow-like colored species.
This type of bird's meat was commercialized and recognized as cheap food, especially for slaves and the poor. This led to a massive hunting campaigns during the 1800's. Due to the large size of their flocks, these birds were seen as a threat to farmers. The last of the species, named Martha, died alone at a Cincinnati, Ohio, Zoo on September 1, 1914.
This flightless bird inhabited the island of Mauritius; it was about one meter tall. Its original appearance on that Pacific island remains a mystery. It is presumed that it became flightless because of the ready availability of abundant food sources (seeds, bulbs, nuts, roots and fallen fruits) and a relative absence of predators on the island of Mauritius. The first recorded mention of the dodo was by Dutch sailors in 1598. In the following 70 years, the bird was hunted to extinction by sailors, their domesticated animals, and other invasive species introduced during that time. The last widely accepted sighting of it was in 1662.
In 1981, the population of this type of hoofed animal of the Pyrenees died naturally on January 6th, 2000, after being found dead under a fallen tree of the Pyrenees. It was just 13 years old.
Also known as the Tasmanian Tiger, this extinct animal was the largest known carnivorous marsupial of modern times. It was wiped out in the wild due to constant hunting in its limited habitat of Tasmania by the year 1936.
